BlenderGPT FAQ
Seven questions cover most of what people ask about BlenderGPT — the $0 free plan boundary, the GitHub name collision, API keys, version support, and how leaving works. Each answer opens with the direct version.
Is BlenderGPT free?
Partly — there is a permanent $0 plan with real daily value. It includes limited assistant access, asset library search and import, and two-way Blender sync.
What the free plan does not include is 3D generation: text-to-3D and image-to-3D start on the Hobby plan at $20 per month, or $14 per month billed yearly.
Is BlenderGPT the same as the BlenderGPT on GitHub?
Same name, same original developer, different software. The GitHub project (gd3kr BlenderGPT) is the 2023 open-source script that required your own OpenAI API key.
The current app relaunched in November 2024 as a cloud product: plan billing instead of API keys, plus a full text-to-3D, rigging, and asset pipeline the script never had.
Is BlenderGPT good — how do I judge it without paying?
Use the free plan as the test: it exercises the same add-on and sync pipeline the paid features use, at $0.
If asset import and scene sync feel solid in your setup, the remaining question is generation quality — Hobby's 500 monthly credits answer that for $14/mo billed yearly.
Is there a ChatGPT addon for Blender?
That phrase usually points at BlenderGPT itself: an AI assistant that drives Blender through conversation, built by the developer of the original GPT-for-Blender script.
Unlike generic ChatGPT plugins, it ships a Blender-specific pipeline: generated models arrive as textured meshes in your open scene, not as text you have to act on.
Do I need an OpenAI API key?
No. The app runs generation in the cloud and bills through plans, so there is no key to configure anywhere.
Guides that mention keys describe the old open-source script — our API key explainer in the tutorial hub untangles the two in detail.
Which Blender versions are supported?
The bridge add-on (currently v2.2.0) requires Blender 4.2.0 or newer — that minimum is set in the add-on manifest itself.
On Windows, macOS, and Linux alike, if Blender 4.2 runs, the add-on runs; generation happens in the cloud, so there is no extra GPU requirement.
How do I cancel, and what about refunds?
Plans renew automatically until canceled, and you can cancel anytime through the account billing controls — access continues to the end of the paid period.
Per the official terms, payments are non-refundable except where required by law or expressly stated at checkout. Downgrading before renewal is the clean exit.
